What We Do

Classical music has long been a stalwart of privilege and racial exclusion. In the U.S., 4.5% of classical musicians identify as Black or Latino, even though they make up roughly 29% of the total U.S. population. Quinteto Latino exists to break the cycles of inequity that exist in the classical music world.

  • To disrupt racial and economic disparities within the classical music field by championing past, present, and future contributions by Latino composers and musicians.

  • To promote classical music by Latino and Latin American composers through performances, commissions, mentoring, and child and adult education.

  • To expand the boundaries of a classical music tradition, commonly perceived as predominantly Western-European, by normalizing equity and inclusion in all our work.

We need more music educators who look like the students they are teaching at school.
— Armando Castellano, Founder and Artistic Director, Quinteto Latino

HOW WE WORK

Whether we are in a K-12 classroom or assembly, performing throughout the Bay Area, or teaching emerging classical musicians of color, we work with a sense of purpose and urgency to disrupt the racial and economic disparities that continue to exist in the classical music space. Through school assemblies, teaching residencies, conferences, workshops, seminars, and concert events, our multi-racial quintet is one of the only organizations in the United States that is dedicated to breaking these barriers.
