¡Bienvenidos! Welcome!

Quinteto Latino is a one-of-a-kind San Francisco Bay Area-based 501(c)3 organization driving national social change in the classical music industry. We seek to break the racial and social barriers that have long existed in the classical music world by spotlighting and performing classical music compositions by Latina/o/e artists, empowering emerging Latina/o/e classical musicians, and providing culturally-competent K-12 classical music education and training to students and music practitioners.

We believe in the deep power of music to change the course of social dynamics.

Our Work

While the classical music world is a leading arts innovator, only a small percentage of its orchestra conductors, composers, and musicians are people of color. Since our founding in 2004, we have worked locally, regionally, and nationally to transform the classical music space from one that is traditionally exclusive and Eurocentric, to one that recognizes, empowers, and positions Latino contributions in classical music leadership and performance. Since our founding, we have worked locally, regionally, and nationally to bring classical music to non-White audiences. Our work weaves Performance, Activism, and Education with the goal of disrupting and transforming the classical music space.

Concert Performance

Quinteto Latino was founded on the principle that a flutist, a hornist, a bassoonist, a clarinetist, and an oboist could combine their passion for classical music and social justice by performing works by Latino classical composers in our community. We perform at venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and offer free concerts too, ensuring that classical music can be enjoyed by all.

Music Education

Our experienced team leads culturally-inclusive mono- and bilingual teaching artist residencies and professional development for classroom teachers, music specialists, and teaching artists. Depending on age and interest, children may learn the instruments of a wind quintet, musical concepts (such as rhythm, pitch, tempo), composition, improvisation, ensemble performing, instrumental coaching, side-by-side performing with the quintet.

Activism

We are transforming classical music from a White, Eurocentric space to one that encourages and advocates for equal entry by classical composers, performers, and practitioners of color. QL Founder & Artistic Director (and Ensemble French hornist) Armando Castellano leads our Activism work by creating equity-focused workshops, conferences, and presentations tailored to the classical music space.
